Fort Myer Base Guide

Welcome
Welcome to the Fort Myer Military Community (FMMC). The garrisoncommand includes Fort Myer, Va. and Fort Lesley J. McNair, D.C. As a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) initiative, Henderson HallMarine Corps (Arlington, Va.) installationmanagement functions will relocate to the Fort Myer Military Community.

Fort Myer
The Fort Myer Military Community provideshousing, support and services to thousands ofactive-duty, reserve and retired Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines, members of the U.S. Coast Guard and their families stationed in the National Capital Region. Fort Myer, Va., is the garrisonheadquarters, and the installation includes Fort McNair in Washington, D.C.

Fort Myer Partners
The Fort Myer Military Community at Fort Myer and Henderson Hall will soon merge as a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure decision to pool installation resources and gain efficiencies as a joint military operation.

Fort McNair
Fort Lesley J. McNair, on the point of land where the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers join in Washington, D.C., has been an Army post for more than 200 years, third only to West Point and Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, in length of service.

Fort McNair Partners
The U.S. Army Military District of Washington, headquartered at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, D.C., is the largest tenant⁄partner supported by FMMC, with assets located at installations in the National Capital Region. Its direct influence extends from Fort A.P. Hill in central Virginia, a major training base, to Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, N.Y., the only active-duty post in the New York metropolitan area.

Headquarters Command
Headquarters Command wasactivated as a provisional headquarters on June 1, 1992 at Fort Myer, Virginia with four companies. In October 1993, the battalion was activated as apermanent unit and aligned with the Military District of Washington.

The Pentagon
The Pentagon is not an FMMC facility, but is a near neighbor of Fort Myer, and FMMC supports many of the Soldiers who work there.

Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., is high on everyone’s list of places to visit when they come to the National Capital Region.

Inprocessing
The first contacts military personnel and families make at a new duty station set the tone for the tour that follows. The Fort Myer Military Communityrecognizes this and seeks to smooth the transition in numerous ways.

Services
The Fort Myer Army Career and Alumni Program (ACAP) is in Fort Myer’s Building 230 and helps transitioningmilitary personnel, their family members and Department of Army civilian employees with a variety of generaltransition assistance courses andseminars.

Leisure and Recreation
A variety of recreation andentertainment programs and services are available at Forts Myer and McNair.

Neighbors & Partners
Fort Myer’s most immediateneighbor is the county of Arlington, originally part of a 10-mile squareparcel of land surveyed in 1791 to be the nation’s capital. It was once known as Alexandria County of the District of Columbia and included Arlington County and part of the neighboring city of Alexandria.

Surrounding Area
The Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area is made up of the District of Columbia and the adjacent areas of Maryland and Northern Virginia. Living and working in this community affords many opportunities to visit some of the most unique and exciting places our country has to offer..
