Senior staff noncommissioned officers from around the base met at the Medal of Honor Golf Course for camaraderie and and educational period June 12.
Senior staff noncommissioned officers from around the base pulled out the clubs and strapped on the spikes to attend an educational period that included hearing the 14th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps speak at the Medal of Honor Golf Course June 12.
‘‘I thought it was a really good time, and a great opportunity for camaraderie. The guest speaker definitely made it worth while,” said 1st Sgt. Jason L. Kappen, C Company, Officer Candidates School first sergeant.
The sergeants major, master gunnery sergeants, first sergeants and master sergeants met with retired Sgt. Major Alford L. McMichael to motivate each other and to discuss the direction of the Corps.
The day-long meeting brought E-8 and E-9s from all around the base to one location. The group started the fun around the same time morning colors sounded, out on the green while working on their swing, but the game wasn’t the only reason the senior enlisted came together.
‘‘It was a great opportunity to network. If I have a question about something, now I know there is someone I can call to get help, or if I need to schedule a (period of military education) for my Marines, I now have a network of points of contact.”
Besides getting to know all of the leaders on base, the Marines also took the time to share thoughts on the different routes that gunnery sergeants can take.
‘‘(McMichael) wanted to dispel perceptions, Marines have as to the first sergeant and master sergeant routes,” said Master Sgt. Delain Johnson, Headquarters and Service Battalion training chief. ‘‘He wanted us to know and understand that we are all equal and to work together.”
