Marines win 5th Warriors of the Sea Challenge

For the fifth straight year, the U.S. Marine Corps running team defeated the British Royal Navy⁄Marines in the annual Warriors of the Sea Challenge, held as part of the Plymouth Half Marathon in Plymouth, England, May 25. Leading the charge for the Marines was 2nd Lt. Sean Barrett from Marine Corps Camp Lejeune, N.C., with a time of 1:10:09 and placing fourth overall in the race field of more than 3,500 runners.

Seconds behind was Staff Sgt. Jeremy Brown, from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., with a time of 1:10:48 placing fifth overall in the race field.

Also in the men’s division, Capt. Rick Jennings from Monterey, Calif., placed eighth overall; Cpl. Ryan Ellis, from MCAS Miramar, placed 16th; Maj. Joseph Galvin, from MCAS Miramar, placed 18th; and Lt. Col. Steve Pederson placed 22nd overall and second overall in the men’s over 40 division.The women continued the success with Capt. Jennifer Ledford, from MCB Camp Pendleton, Calif., leading the way with a time of 1:23:27, finishing sixth overall. Cpl. Heather Albert and 2nd Lt. Erin Demchko finished 13th and 14th overall in the women’s division.

The Marine Corps Running Team will once again face the British Royal Navy⁄Marines at the Marine Corps Marathon on Oct. 26 in competition for the coveted Challenge Cup.

Band call

Calling all bands! The MCM is looking for a local band to perform at RunStock, part of the MCM Event Series Aug. 23. The evening features a 5K race aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, followed by a live concert in Butler Stadium. Bands are invited to submit a demo for consideration.

Weight⁄Rep competition schedule

The Weight⁄Rep 2008 competition takes place every second Friday, with the exception of September, from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the fitness deck of Barber Physical Activity Center.

Participants will be required to weigh-in before the competition begins. The competition is open to active duty and retired military, DOD civilians and their family members.

  • Max Bench Press–July 11

  • Max Rep Pull-ups–Aug. 8

  • Max Dead Lift–Sept. 9

  • Max Rep Pull-ups–Oct. 10

  • Max Squat–Nov. 14

  • Max Rep Crunches–Dec. 12

    Scoring:

    Max Contest: Squat, dead-lift and bench press score based on percentage of body weight lifted.

    Max Rep Contest: Pull-ups, push-ups and crunches. Highest number of reps successfully completed in two minutes.

    Awards:

  • T-Shirt for all participants

  • Award for Maxed Out Male Overall

  • Award for Maxed Out Female Overall

  • Award Trophy for Command⁄Battalion Overall
