INDEPENDENCE DAY TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS

E-Mail This Article Print This Story
If you are planning on traveling for Independence Day, keep the following in mind:

  • Review the weather forecast for your route and your destination prior to heading out.

  • Check your vehicle thoroughly prior to beginning your trip to ensure mechanical soundness — for example, examine your tires, lights, fluids, brakes.

  • Always wear your seatbelt and ensure that all passengers are wearing theirs.

  • Obey the speed limit.

  • Never drive when drinking alcoholic beverages.

  • Stay calm in emergency situations, remember to slow down.

  • Be prepared to adjust to weather changes or any construction area during travel. Slow down. If the weather is severe, pull off the highway to a safe area until the storm is over and⁄or until travel conditions permit you to travel.

  • Give yourself sufficient time to arrive at your destination and rest every two hours.

  • Enjoy the beautiful scenery as you travel about, but be on the alert for wildlife that may unexpectedly run in front of your vehicle. This is the peak season for vehicle wildlife crashes.

  • An auto club membership can be of great help in case of a vehicle breakdown.

  • A current alert roster is great to have in case of an emergency — is yours up to date?

  • Avoid traveling during peak traffic times. These are Thursday evening and Monday afternoon

  • Be alert for aggressive drivers. Do not get into a confrontation with them. Instead, give them plenty of room and let them go ahead if it’s a must.

The FMMC Installation Safety Office - (703) 696-6996 - is reminding everyone to use the TRiPS online POV risk assessment tool, which is mandatory for all personnel going on leave, pass, or TDY. TRiPS can be found at crc.army.mil⁄home.
