They say a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. If that holds true, then a run of 10 miles must start with a qualifying run.

The 24th annual Army Ten-Miler has been a Military District of Washington tradition since 1985. Since the first race, tens of thousands of people have participated. The course passes by such historic landmarks as the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol, and is the biggest ten-mile run in America.

Although the 26,000 openings for the race were filled within 21 days of the April 1 opening, the Fort Myer Military Community has 48 spots reserved for teams that are willing to show the best of FMMC’s competitive spirit.

The race is organized in teams of up to 8 people, the times from the best four of which count. The team consisting of service members with the best time will be awarded the coveted Commander’s Cup.

The Army Ten-Miler will take place on October 5 at 8 a.m. The route will take runners down Route 27 across the Arlington Memorial Bridge, then to Constitution Avenue, Virginia Avenue, the Rock Creek Parkway, Independence Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, First Street, 14th Street and I-395 back to the Pentagon.

The Fort Myer Fitness Center will be running a qualifying run on July 25, at 6:15 a.m. in the Spates Community Club parking lot. The 10K (6.2 miles) run will be around Fort Myer.

The post is looking to fill teams of: active duty men 39 and under, active duty women 39 and under, active duty men 40 and over, active duty women 40 and over and a team of all-comers, including civilian and DoD employees.

To sign up for the qualifying run, call (703) 696-7867, or visit www.fmmcmwr.com.
