Independence Day safety message

E-Mail This Article Print This Story
With great courage and vision, our founding fathers created this nation. Theirs was a vision of freedom and independence for all. That is what we celebrate on this 4th of July holiday. It is largely because of your dedication, courage, and loyalty that these ideals are sustained.

Historically, July 3rd and 4th are the deadliest driving days of the year. Leaders need to emphasize wearing seatbelts, driving during daylight hours, driving sober, and driving within speed limits. Maximize your available time by focusing your safety engagements on your high-risk personnel. Someone in your unit always knows who these high-risk people are. Tap into this knowledge. Typically, high-risk personnel are your younger Soldiers who may have recently returned from a tour in Afghanistan or Iraq.

Although most of our fatal accident risks are linked to vehicle operations (especially motorcycles), be sure to also focus on heat injury, fireworks, and water-related accident risks.

I am counting on all MEDCOM personnel to do all you reasonably can to avoid unnecessary risks, reduce risks and return safe and whole to duty after this 4th of July holiday. Engaged leaders make a difference. Thanks for keeping our Army Strong!

Lt. Gen. Eric B. Schoomaker
Army Surgeon General
