Effective July 1, Soldiers may designate from one to 10 persons to receive all or a portion of the $100,000 death gratuity payment. Soldiers must designate amount payable in 10% increments.
If a Soldier fails, at any time, to make a designation or designates only a portion of the amount payable, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service will pay the amount of the death gratuity not covered by a designation to the following in the order listed: first to the surviving spouse; if no spouse, then to any surviving children; if no children, then to surviving parents or their survivors.
If none of the preceding exist, payment will be made to the duly appointed executor or administrator of the estate.
Whenever a Soldier designates a person other than the spouse to receive all or a portion of the $100,000, the Army (the brigade⁄ Separate battalion S-1s and military personnel division with Soldier records responsibility) is required to notify the Soldier’s spouse in writing.
