Summer camp cartoon creations
By Taurean Washington
Fort Detrick’s Child and Youth Services in Frederick, Md. have been stirring up a lot of things in the community recently. One of these things was the creation of an informative animation for the YS Summer Camp program. The youth used the Animate Your World computer software to create it. The cartoon featured safety rules of the program in a cool way. A recognition ceremony was made on June 5th.
Youth honored: Ian M., Chason H., Isaiah R., Maya S., William K., Jacob H., Heiker M., Ben D., Shamara D., and William L.
Their cartoon received rave reviews.
Teen center-present and future
By Mabelrose Roberts
The teen center has been undergoing preparation for the summer events along with new staff. The youth is still celebrating the end of the school and the camps that are available for them to enjoy.
‘‘After reviewing the plans for the summer, I feel this is the best summer camp, yet” said Taurean Washington, youth technology lab lead.
Seventh grader, Isaiah Rowe also said, ‘‘We are going to Six Flags at the end of the summer and I hope I can go!”
But that’s not all that’s been going on at the Child and Youth Services. An award ceremony June 5 recognized Jazmine Craig, Andre Mose, Oscar Coppola, David Farrell, and Deymarie Middlebrooks for creating recipes that got into a Boys and Girls Club recipe book. Some of the dishes include Broccoli Casserole, Red Chili and Spaghetti alla Carbonara. The award ceremony, located at the CYS gymnasium, showed appreciation for the kids, appreciation for their resourcefulness and the imagination that they show us through their accomplishments.
Along with cooking, there is the Digital Arts Festival recognition for William Lynn, who participated and became the regional winner for Graphic Design. He used his talent to help encourage good cleaning habits for the Earth.
And last but not least, a group of kids designed a summer camp cartoon for the new arrivals describing the lifestyle and staff as well as the rules. For example, the first rule is ‘‘Have fun!” Kids who enter these doors will be greeted with smiles and will find help for any challenges they might encounter.
Youth Scoop is a new section of the Standard created by Child and Youth Services members. Items featured will include articles, poems, comics and more.
The goal of this section is to promote and encourage Fort Detrick’s youth by featuring their writing and creative skills.
