On Independence Day, the Fourth of July, we will pause and recognize those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom and safety of our nation. Thanks to their service and sacrifice, America achieved its independence. Every July 4th since, Americans have given thanks for that freedom and the wonderful nation our country has become.
The Fourth of July, across the North Atlantic Regional Medical Command and America, our military Families, civilian employees and friends will enjoy picnics, parades, and the uplifting beat of ìThe Stars and Stripes Forever.î As you celebrate Independence Day, it is equally important that each of you put safety at the top of the list of activities.
This holiday weekend many of you will travel to celebrate with friends and relatives; in doing so, identify, assess, and then ask yourself what you can do about the hazards likely to be encountered, and then make risk decisions and implement controls to eliminate them. In addition to traveling, fireworks, swimming, boating and other recreational pursuits may pose potential hazards; take steps to eliminate the source of those hazards.
Leaders play a crucial role in promoting and sustaining safety awareness. Ensure all Soldiers and civilian employees receive a holiday safety reminder before they depart for the holiday weekend, stressing privately-owned vehicle and motorcycle safety, and most importantly, do not drink and drive.
I wish you all a safe and enjoyable Independence Day weekend. Think safety first.
