When the 2008 Navy-Marine Corps Relief fund drive ended May 8 with a total of $112,509, within a half percent of last year’s total of $113,119, there was much praise for CSC Rhett Cabanacan and ADC Jay Lindsay, the two who headed the drive.
In spite of an economic downturn, it was still the second highest total in Pax River’s history, and $12,602 above the $99,907 raised in 2006.
It turns out that everyone was wrong. The total was actually $114,803.61 — $1,684 above 2007 and a new record for Pax River.
According to Maureen Farrell, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society’s Pax River director, the new figure came about when ‘‘the regional coordinator of the N-MCRS fund drive completed an audit of the accounts for this year and found that the Patuxent River drive was higher than reported.” By contrast, 19 Naval District Washington commands had lower receipts than originally reported.
Pax River Commanding Officer Capt. Andy Macyko called it ‘‘awesome news” and congratulated the two chiefs on the achievement. ‘‘You really went above and beyond in N-MCRS fund raising right up to the end of the drive,” he stated.
‘‘It’s certainly a pleasant surprise,” said Cabanacan. ‘‘It’s more money for our Sailors and Marines. It also means that it will be Chief Lindsay’s job next year to beat a higher number.”
