Alice Herring named Dahlgren School principal

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – Dr. Elaine Beraza, Director, Department of Defense (DoD) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDS-Cuba) has announced that Alice Herring has been named principal of Dahlgren School, aboard Naval Support Facility Dahlgren, Va., in the New York⁄Virginia⁄Puerto Rico District. She replaces Stephen Hovanic who has accepted a position as an Instructional Systems Specialist at the Area Service Center in Peachtree City.

Herring is currently the principal of the U.S. Elementary Section of the SHAPE International School. She began her career with the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) in 1982 when she taught home economics at SHAPE, Belgium. She later taught at the AFCENT International School in The Netherlands. She then served as educational program manager and then as assistant principal in the elementary school for 12 years. She also served as principal of Vicenza (Italy) Elementary School for six years.

‘‘Alice Herring is a great fit for Dahlgren School. Her focus on student achievement and community collaboration are natural links with existing expectations,” said Michael Gould, New York⁄ Virginia⁄Puerto Rico District Superintendent. ‘‘I am excited about what her leadership will provide for the future of Dahlgren School.”

A native of Goldsboro, N.C., Herring earned her bachelor’s degree in home economics from the University of Texas – Austin. She served as a dietician at hospitals in Texas and North Carolina, and taught in Texas and South Carolina. She is married to Allen Smolonsky, who has been a DoDEA teacher for 31 years. They have one son.
