Steel Drum artists entertained the crowd seeking relief from the heat under ventilated tents at the NAVSEA ‘‘Around the World” experience.
The waterfront near the Display Ship USS Barry (DD 933) served as the backdrop June 26 for the Multi-Cultural ‘‘Around the World” experience, which attracted 800 Sailors, Department of Defense civilian employees and contractors on the Washington Navy Yard, many of whom came from the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).
The NAVSEA Employees Activity Community (NEAC) sponsored the event, which featured cuisine and entertainment from China, Germany, India, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Trinidad and the United States.
The main purpose of the event was to make NAVSEA employees aware of the different cultures at their work site.
‘‘A lot of people, not just NEAC members, learned about the cultures of eight countries,” said Erica Poindexter, branch head of Command Administrative Support-SEA 10 at NAVSEA and chairman of the NAVSEA Employees Activity Community.
People who attended the event purchased $10 tickets for a specific country. Eight food booths were set up in the parking lot at Admiral Willard Park.
Another set of eight booths were located on a portion of Admiral Dahlgren Park, where information about each country was available. The park was also the site for a large white tent, where various groups performed, such as the Jamaican Steel Drum Band, Alpine Dancers from Germany, Tai Yim Kung Fu Dancers from China, Bollywood Dancers from India and Los Quetzales Mexican Dance Ensemble.
Additionally, there were caricature artists, stilt walkers, jesters and clowns. Face painting, moon bounce and games were provided for children.
